Building a website with AI: Lovable, Bolt, v0 or a developer?

Lovable, Bolt, v0, Framer and Wix AI compared: what AI can really do for your website, where it falls short and when to bring in a developer. An honest guide from Estonia.

Updated: 2 October 2026By the OpenWeb360 team

Lovable, Bolt, v0, Framer and Wix's AI builder can produce a good-looking website in an hour. So do you still need a developer? It depends on what the website has to do. This guide explains where AI builders are genuinely enough, where they fall short and how to choose without wasting money.

The main AI tools and what each is good at

ToolWhat it isBest for
LovablePrompt-to-app builder that generates a web app with a database and sign-inMVPs, internal tools, interactive prototypes
BoltBrowser-based builder for full-stack apps from a promptQuick experiments and demos
v0Generates interface components and pages (React, built by Vercel)Designers and developers who want to speed up the interface
FramerVisual website builder with AI featuresDesign-led marketing sites
Wix and similar AI buildersTemplate-based builders that generate a site from a questionnaireA simple business card site with no custom needs
Cursor, Claude Code and other coding assistantsTools that help a developer write code fasterDevelopers, not a replacement for one

Features and plans of these tools change quickly, so check the current details on each tool's own website before you decide.

When an AI builder is enough

  • You need a prototype or demo to test an idea or show investors.
  • It's a small internal tool used by a few people.
  • You need a simple one-page site and don't depend on search traffic.
  • You have time to learn the tool and fix small problems yourself.

Where AI builders fall short

  1. Search visibility. Many AI-built sites are client-side rendered, so search engines receive an almost empty page first. Read more in our Lovable guide.
  2. Security. Database access rules, API keys and roles often need an expert check before real user data is stored.
  3. Speed. Heavy bundles and unoptimised images hurt Core Web Vitals. See website speed.
  4. Brand and uniqueness. AI output tends to look similar to everyone else's. A distinct brand needs a designer.
  5. Multilingual setup. Correct hreflang, separate language URLs and translated metadata are rarely handled well. See multilingual websites.
  6. Legal basics. Cookie consent, privacy policy and GDPR need deliberate setup.
  7. The last 20%. Fixing one thing by prompt can quietly break another. Without structure, each change gets riskier.

The hybrid approach most businesses end up with

In practice the best result often comes from combining both:

  1. Use AI for speed: prototype, draft copy and test the idea quickly.
  2. Use a developer for the foundation: SEO, security, performance, brand and analytics.
  3. Keep the project maintainable: clean repository, documentation and a clear way to continue.

This is exactly what we do for projects started in Lovable. See Lovable developer in Estonia.

What it costs in practice

An AI builder subscription is cheap, but your time is not free: 10–40 hours of prompting, fixing and learning is common for a serious site. A studio gives you a fixed price and scope, starting at €490 excluding VAT. See website cost in Estonia 2026 and published prices of Estonian studios. For platform comparison without AI, read Wix, WordPress or Tilda.

How to decide: five questions

  1. Should the site bring customers from Google? If yes, plan for SEO setup.
  2. Will it store user data or take payments? If yes, get a security review.
  3. Does the brand matter to your customers' trust?
  4. Do you have time to learn and maintain it?
  5. Will you need several languages?

If you answered yes to two or more, an AI builder alone is unlikely to be enough. Not sure? Send us the link and we'll tell you honestly.

Frequently asked questions

Will AI replace web developers?

AI replaces some routine work and speeds up prototypes. Decisions about structure, security, search visibility and brand still need an experienced person.

Is a website made with Lovable good for SEO?

Not by default. It usually needs pre-rendering or server rendering, correct metadata and a sitemap. It can be done.

Which is better: Lovable, Bolt or v0?

They overlap. Lovable and Bolt build whole apps from prompts, v0 focuses on interface components. Choose by the type of project and try the free tier first.

Can you take over a site I built with AI?

Yes. We start with a written audit and keep what works. See our process for Lovable projects.
